Along the Wandering Way

Why people seek spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a scheduled time and place to slow down, come to know yourself and God, while discovering the meaning, identity, and purpose that God has for you in the Kingdom project. All of this takes place with the guidance of a spiritual companion. People seek direction for various reasons. Here are just a few:

  • You find yourself in a “faith rut.” You’re filled with doubt, hurt, confusion, or a stale prayer life. You often ask yourself, “What’s the point?” “Do I actually believe this?” “Is this all there is?”
  • You are seeking truth, faith, meaning and purpose in life. You may be on a spiritual journey and need a guide.
  • Life is overwhelming and exhausting. You long to slow down, breathe, seek clearer vision for life, feel human, and pursue rest.
  • You want to explore your life’s story in order to have freedom and healing from your past or current patterns.
  • You are discerning a major decision, job or family-related questions, vocation and purpose, or a major life transition or loss.
  • You long for a deeper relationship with the Trinity. You want to lean into spiritual rhythms that fuel the soul and empower a life with Christ in the world.

Spiritual direction is a confidential, judgment-free space to be real about your questions, your struggles, and your faith. You lead the conversation, and I listen alongside the Holy Spirit — always at your pace, always with respect for your story.

Glimpse inside a typical session

~ As you arrive, whether in person or online, I welcome you and we settle in. Each session is one hour. If we’re meeting online, I encourage you to find a quiet, private, peaceful place in your home or office.

~ We start with a Holy Pause. We slow down by breathing and becoming aware of our body and the presence of the Holy Spirit with us. The pause helps let go of the day’s distractions and still ourselves.

~Then I light a Christ candle symbolizing Trinity’s presence. I share an opening prayer, poem, or practice to focus your mind and heart. If you are online, you’re welcome to light a candle to focus you when distractions arise.

~ We transition into stillness and silence, and begin conversation when you are ready.

~ Each person is unique. In this time, you may share what you’ve been noticing, feeling, or experiencing in your walk with God. We go deeper with questions, reflections, silence, and prayer. You may choose to focus on a prayer practice to guide our time. Some directees desire to explore what’s happening in everyday life by looking for God’s movement. Some areas of focus may be around discernment, struggles, loss or transition, hurt/trauma, parenting, marriage, or prayer.

~ If you’re unsure where to begin, I can offer prompts. Together with the Spirit, we listen deeply to your story, noticing what arises and explore it gently. When appropriate, I ask questions or offer reflection to help you go deeper.

~ Along the way, I may suggest invitations for prayer, reflections, or contemplative exploration—always with your consent.

~ During your session, we might explore where God feels present or absent in your life, pray with images or scripture, engage with contemplative prayer forms, use art, rest in silence, or wonder together with curiosity.

~ Spiritual direction moves at a slower, more spacious pace than most conversations. That is because we are allowing room for listening and discovering. This kind of prayerful listening often stirs deep emotions. Instead of turning away from them, we gently lean in, listening for the ways God might be speaking through what you feel.

~ Like counseling or coaching, you bring the context for exploration. I serve as a faithful companion as we listen for and pay attention to the ways the Trinity is showing up in your life. I aid in going deeper, offering an outside perspective, and gently holding your story with grace and compassion.

~ We come to conclusion by noticing any invitations, a-ha moments, or movements of grace from God in our time together. I end with a final prayer or quiet pause.

~ Lastly, we schedule your next session. Spiritual direction typically takes place once a month.
